Την αύξηση της άδειας μητρότητας από τις 18 στις 22 εβδομάδες αποφάσισε το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο, υλοποιώντας μια προγραμματική θέση της Κυβέρνησης, με την οποία είχαν ήδη συμφωνήσει οι κοινωνικοί εταίροι.

Σε δηλώσεις του ο Υπουργός Εργασίας και Κοινωνικών Ασφαλίσεων Γιάννης Παναγιώτου ανάφερε ότι από την αύξηση θα επωφεληθούν γύρω στις 5.000 νέες εργαζόμενες μητέρες σε ετήσια βάση, προσθέτοντας ότι αναλογιστική μελέτη επιβεβαίωσε ότι το οικονομικό κόστος ανταποκρίνεται στις δυνατότητες του Ταμείου Κοινωνικών Ασφαλίσεων.

«Υλοποιείται η προγραμματική θέση της Κυβέρνησης για αύξηση της άδειας μητρότητας από τις 18 στις 22 εβδομάδες και εφόσον εγκριθεί από την Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων θα επηρεάσει άμεσα χιλιάδες νέες εργαζόμενες μητέρες», ανέφερε στις δηλώσεις του ο κ. Παναγιώτου, σημειώνοντας ότι το νομοσχέδιο θα κατατεθεί άμεσα στην Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων.

Σύμφωνα με τον κ. Παναγιώτου, το νομοσχέδιο προνοεί αύξηση της διάρκειας της άδειας μητρότητας από τις 18 στις 22 εβδομάδες για το πρώτο παιδί μέσω τοκετού ή παρένθετης μητέρας και από τις 16 στις 20 εβδομάδες για το πρώτο παιδί μέσω υιοθεσίας, ενώ επίσης αυξάνεται η επιπρόσθετη άδειας μητρότητας λόγω νοσηλείας του βρέφους μετά τη γέννηση, από τις 6 στις 8 εβδομάδες.

«Αναμένεται ότι θα επωφεληθούν περίπου 5000 νέες εργαζόμενες μητέρες σε ετήσια βάση», πρόσθεσε, «ενώ σημειώνεται ότι δικαιούχες για την αυξημένη άδεια μητρότητας θα είναι και όλες οι νέες μητέρες που απέκτησαν πρόσφατα το πρώτο παιδί τους και κατά την έγκριση του νομοσχεδίου δεν θα έχουν ολοκληρώσει την αξιοποίηση των 18 εβδομάδων της υφιστάμενης διάρκειας της άδειας μητρότητας, στις οποίες θα προστεθούν οι 4 εβδομάδες αυξημένης διάρκειας της άδειας μητρότητας».

Ο Υπουργός Εργασίας τόνισε πως η Κυβέρνηση «εφαρμόζει με συνέπεια την ανθρωποκεντρική πολιτική για την οποία ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας έχει λάβει λαϊκή εντολή, σύμφωνα με τις ανάγκες της κοινωνίας και τις δυνατότητες της οικονομίας».

«Η αύξηση της άδειας μητρότητας θα συμβάλει σημαντικά στην ενίσχυση της συμφιλίωσης μεταξύ της επαγγελματικής και της οικογενειακής ζωής και θα επιτρέψει στις νέες εργαζόμενες μητέρες να παραμείνουν για μεγαλύτερο χρονικό διάστημα κοντά στα παιδιά τους κατά τους πρώτους μήνες της ζωής τους», πρόσθεσε.

Αναφορικά με τις μητέρες που βρίσκονται σε άδεια μητρότητας και δεν θα την ολοκληρώσουν πριν την θέσπιση του νομοσχεδίου, ο κ. Παναγιώτου είπε ότι η άδεια τους θα επεκταθεί για ακόμη τέσσερις βδομάδες.

“Οπότε όσο πιο σύντομα το εγκρίνει η Βουλή τόσο το καλύτερο για τις μητέρες που έχουν ήδη γεννήσει και είναι σε άδεια”, κατέληξε.

The increase of maternity leave from 18 to 22 weeks was decided by the Council of Ministers, implementing a programmatic position of the Government, with which the social partners had already agreed.

In his statements, the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance, Yiannis Panagiotou, stated that around 5,000 new working mothers will benefit from the increase on an annual basis, adding that an actuarial study confirmed that the financial cost corresponds to the possibilities of the Social Insurance Fund.

“The programmatic position of the Government to increase maternity leave from 18 to 22 weeks is being implemented and if it is approved by the House of Representatives, it will directly affect thousands of new working mothers”, said Mr. Panagiotou in his statements, noting that the bill will be tabled directly to the House of Representatives.

According to Mr. Panagiotou, the bill provides for an increase in the duration of maternity leave from 18 to 22 weeks for the first child through birth or surrogate mother and from 16 to 20 weeks for the first child through adoption, while also increasing the additional maternity leave due to hospitalization of the infant after birth, from 6 to 8 weeks.

“It is expected that approximately 5,000 new working mothers will benefit annually,” he added, “while it is noted that beneficiaries of the increased maternity leave will also be all new mothers who recently had their first child and upon the approval of the bill will not have complete the utilization of the 18 weeks of the existing duration of maternity leave, to which the 4 weeks of increased duration of maternity leave will be added”.

The Minister of Labor emphasized that the Government “consistently implements the human-centered policy for which the President of the Republic has received a popular mandate, in accordance with the needs of society and the potential of the economy”.

“Increasing maternity leave will make a significant contribution to strengthening the reconciliation between work and family life and allow new working mothers to stay longer with their children in the first months of their lives,” he added.

Regarding the mothers who are on maternity leave and will not complete it before the adoption of the bill, Mr. Panagiotou said that their leave will be extended for another four weeks.

“So the sooner Parliament approves it, the better for mothers who have already given birth and are on leave,” he concluded.
